B on 33: Beautifying Our Byways 

B on 33 aims to restore native wildflowers and grasses to benefit native pollinators, reduce noxious weeds and beautify our scenic byway.  The project will encompass the eight miles (~100 acres of land) along the bike path connecting Victor to Driggs parallel to Idaho State Highway 33.

If you’re trying to encourage native plants in your own yard, this is great advice on seed collecting. Be sure never to collect more than 1/3 of the seeds to allow that plant to reseed and feed wildlife. Using unwanted return envelopes makes for ideal storage conditions so seeds won’t mold. The B on 33 team is back at work, this time meeting with Idaho Transportation Department’s Cathy Ford, Roadside Program Administrator out of Boise, and Tracy Brewer of our District 6, in Victor on Highway 33 and Cedron. We were taking notes, being safe, and learning how best to tackle our ambitious project of planting native wildflowers along our scenic byway. Don’t worry, we will be sharing with you our gardening successes and challenges, so you too can add native wildflowers to your landscape. Lastly, a BIG shout out to Valley Lumber & Rental who donated the safety vests, and Lisa Foster of Pine Needle Embroidery who made them look so stylish and official! There’s so much we can all learn about why native plants are so critical and why invasives are such a problem. Sadly this workshop isn’t currently available near us but the web has great resources. Just learn one noxious weed per month and you’ll be off to a great start.

Thistles, houndstongue, and spotted knapweed (pictured) are all in full bloom right now. They are noxious invasive weeds. Cut off the flower heads before they set seed and you’ll save yourself from thousands of additional germinating weed seeds. All noxious weeds should be bagged and landfilled so they don’t continue to spread. Weeds know no boundaries, so talk to your neighbors and tackle public spaces too. We’re looking at ways to combat the invasive weeds and grasses on the bike path corridor so we can replace it with native wildflowers to feed beneficial pollinators.

Shout out to the new @tetoncountyidaho Weed Supervisor, Cameron Hieronymus for responding to community and neighbor concerns about noxious weeds on neglected properties. That is the first step towards remediation - first with a letter to the landowner notifying them of the issue (many are absentee landowners) and if the weed problems persist, the County is allowed to do weed mitigation/spraying at the owners expense. Let's all join forces to eliminate noxious weeds from Teton County neighborhoods and public lands. Why is the B on 33: Beautifying Our Byways project so important? Migratory pollinators depend on interconnected habitat to successfully travel from 500 ft to 150 miles and find safety, shelter, and food sources en route. Skip the gym. The recent rain makes today an excellent day to get out and hand pull noxious weeds from your property, your neighbor’s, or along public pathways. The rain loosens up the soil so you can yank out the whole taproot. Good choices to target today would be Spotted knapweed (pictured) which is abundant along all of the newer bike paths and sidewalks and Houndstoungue, whose pink flowers are already turning into those nasty burrs. Any weed with flowers or seeds should be disposed of with household waste in the landfill or burned. Composting weed seeds just leads to more weeds. Not sure what’s a weed and what’s a native? Hey local Beekeepers! Want to earn fame and fortune? Enter your honey in the first ever local Honey Taste Off!! B on 33: Beautifying Our Byways and UI Extension/Beekeepers are hosting an event on Friday June 21 6-8 pm at Highpoint Cider to celebrate Pollinator Week. We’ll be having guests taste test and vote for their favorite local honey. It is FREE to enter. Grand prize includes $50 gift cert to Food Shed Idaho, grand champion ribbon, and bragging rights/social media promotion and a write up in the TVN about you and your bees. We will also allow vendors to set up a free table to sell their bee related products. To Enter: 1. Let us know. (Email Bon33tv@gmail.com) 2. Donate 1 labeled pint of your honey. Either arrange for pick up or drop it off at Food Shed Idaho in Victor during open hours (10-6pm; closed Tuesday/Wednesday) or at the event Fr 6/21 before 6 pm. 3. Write a brief description of your honey - this could be as simple as your name and the location of your hives, or a longer paragraph with any details you feel are interesting/important, including if/how it can be purchased 4. You do NOT need to attend the event if you don’t want to. You can still be crowned the audience favorite. 5. If you would like a free vendor table to sell your wares during the evening event, you are welcome to do so. There is no fee, beyond the 1% sales tax collected by the city of Victor. 6. It’s ok if making honey is just a hobby and not a business for you; we’d still welcome your honey to be crowned the Best of Teton Valley! Feel free to stack the audience with your friends and fans. If you’d like to attend the tasting to chat with people about beekeeping or any of your other endeavors, we welcome that, but we understand summer is busy, so you are also welcome to skip the event and let your honey speak for itself. Stop by Food Shed Idaho on Friday 5/31 between 4-6 pm to chat with the B on 33 team about our project and try some of Cecily Costa’s gourmet treats and wonderful wines from Spain and Portugal at the first of this summer’s Sips & Snacks events. If you are a “foodie” and you’ve never been to Food Shed Idaho on Hwy 31 in Victor, you will be delighted by the astonishing selection of specialty food not available elsewhere in our region. Prepare to stock up on some delicacies. Cecily, a B on 33 founding member, also hosts one of the wildflower test plots planted in Nov 2023 which we eagerly await new growth - along with her gorgeous array of daffodils and tulips.
